2005 "Rookie Camp" RECAP
During the weekend of April 30, 2005 and May 1, 2005 the Saint Louis
University Men’s Ice Hockey team held its annual “Rookie Camp”. Eighteen
prospective student athletes attended the camp, of which twelve are
already committed to SLU for the fall 2005 semester. Other attendees are
either in the process of applying to the university or making their
final decision.

The coaches and administration thank all the participants, current
players and Alumni players for making the 2005 “Rookie Camp” a huge
success. During the first day on the ice the Rookies experienced Head
Coach John Bosch and Associate Coach Kevin McGlynn as they ran the
Rookies through an hour and fifteen minutes of high tempo flows drills
culminating into a brisk 40 minute 5 on 5 scrimmage that ended when
incoming committed freshman defenseman, Tyler Crews shattered a pane of
glass directly behind the goal. Could this be a glimpse of what will be
seen from the “new look” Billikens and Crews – shattering glass and
records as they prepare for the 2005-2006 season? Off the ice, on
Saturday, the Rookies met the current players and Alumni at a Team
Social that was highlighted by the 2004-2005 Season Awards Presentation
by Coach Bosch.
On Sunday, several students toured the SLU Campus prior to heading to
the rink for more on ice activity. Associate Grad Coach, Justin Stiehr
took over the on ice coaching duties and led the Rookies through their
paces with a good mix of offensive and defensive situational drills
while Coach Bosch and Coach McGlynn observed. After an hour and ten
minutes, the participants took a break for the ice cut and then returned
to several long ice – flow drills led by SLU Division 2 Head Coach, Mike
McLaughlin and new Assistant D2 Coach, Nathan Ryckman. The camp closed
on Sunday with a good 35 minute 4 on 4 scrimmage.
Overall, the camp gave the Rookies the opportunity to experience all
the Saint Louis University coaches, meet current players, meet Alumni
players and get to know each other in order to assist with the
transition to SLU in the fall of 2005. The coaches’ assessment was very
positive with the opportunities that exist for the incoming freshmen
class. “I believe that this could be the best incoming group of freshmen
and transfers that we have seen in the last 5 years.” said Coach Bosch
as he looked over the list of participants. “I have a difficult time
making any separation or individualizing this group of incoming players
as they seem to have immediately meshed during this camp. Mini Camp in
late July, Try-Out Camp in late August and the new season coming up this
fall will be an exciting time for us all.”
